April 2017
Delivering Effective Transport Policy, LondonBOOK NOW
05/04/2017 09:00:00 - 05/04/2017 17:00:00

Across the world, transport policy provides the guiding principles for the planning, assessment, delivery and management of transport infrastructure and services. These principles are set in the wider context of social, economic and environmental goals and constraints. Through a range of senior leaders, appointed officials, stakeholders and professional advisors, they exert a powerful influence on the way in which the transport planning process operates and secures change on the ground. Transport policy is inherently inter-twined with the process of politics, public debate and the representation of key issues in the press and media.

Designing for Modellers, LondonBOOK NOW
25/04/2017 09:00:00 - 25/04/2017 17:00:00

To ensure that transport models are built accurately and efficiently modellers need an appreciation of the physical infrastructure which underpins them.

This course has been developed to provide modellers with an opportunity to gain a better understanding of the physical transport network on which models are based.  Taught through theory and practical examples, participants will gain an awareness of the foundations of highway and traffic design; the traffic survey process; traffic flow, speed and capacity relationships; traffic management and the designs of junctions; road safety and design considerations to encourage walking and cycling.

It is envisaged that this clarification of how the theoretical representation of a transport network and user demand fit into the wider transport network, would reduce the number of designing-modelling-designing iterations between modellers and design engineers and enable the development of realistic models in a shorter period of time.

Advanced Road Safety Audit and Engineering, LondonBOOK NOW
03/05/2017 09:00:00 - 04/05/2017 17:00:00

In 2014 1,775 people died in traffic accidents in Great Britain, a 4% increase from 2013. Although Great Britain remains one of the best performing countries in the world when it comes to road safety, there are still improvements that can be made to reduce the number of deaths and injuries occurring on our roads. This course is split over two days, on the first day delegates will examine ‘human factors’ associated with road safety and will particularly focus on the implementation of the ‘safe systems’ approach to casualty reduction and its relevance in road safety audit and applied engineering practice, as one way of ensuring that safety is given sufficient consideration in the design process. Day 2 covers international road safety engineering and audit process, with a focus on the World Health Organisation (WHO) International Decade of Action and it compares and contrasts typical UK practices and conditions with those likely to be encountered internationally.

Designing for Buses in the Urban Environment, LondonBOOK NOW
17/05/2017 09:00:00 - 17/05/2017 17:00:00

This one-day course will highlight common mistakes that can occur during the planning and design of bus interchanges and infrastructure. Exploring issues that may at first appear minor, but if not identified and addressed early can result in challenging and costly remedial work during the construction and post opening phases of the project. Many of these design issues occur because the designers or those approving the design may lack the specialist knowledge of bus interchange requirements, vehicle manoeuvrability and transport operations. Taught through practical examples and case studies, the course will provide an introduction to the topic, allowing potential issues to be recognised and removed at the design stage enabling costly and time consuming issues to be avoided.

Risk, Liability and Project Delivery - Essential Legislation for Highways and Transport Practitioners, LondonBOOK NOW
17/05/2017 09:00:00 - 18/05/2017 17:00:00

The reduction in personnel within many local authorities has led to internal staff and term consultants having to become familiar with wider and varying areas of activity, often without being provided sufficient training on the legal requirements placed on highway authorities. In addition the current pressures on management of the network as well as delivery of highway and traffic projects can at times mean that not all practitioners have a complete understanding of the powers, statutory duties and the legal and administrative bases on which the network is managed and projects are promoted. The legislation affecting transport practitioners is wide ranging with often serious consequences for non-compliance. Covering the main duties, powers and obligations placed on practitioners by UK legislation, this course provides an essential insight into the distinction between law and guidance and the risks that can arise from departing from this.
