Description: To ensure that transport models are built accurately and efficiently modellers need an appreciation of the physical infrastructure which underpins them. This course has been developed to provide modellers with an opportunity to gain a better understanding of the physical transport network on which models are based. Taught through theory and practical examples, participants will gain an awareness of the foundations of highway and traffic design; the traffic survey process; traffic flow, speed and capacity relationships; traffic management and the designs of junctions; road safety and design considerations to encourage walking and cycling. It is envisaged that this clarification of how the theoretical representation of a transport network and user demand fit into the wider transport network, would reduce the number of designing-modelling-designing iterations between modellers and design engineers and enable the development of realistic models in a shorter period of time.
