Sesame Ring Could Replace Boston Travel Pass

Two students in the US have developed a wearable device that could spell the demise of the bus or train pass.

The Sesame Ring is a 3D-printed ring that can be loaded with money and then placed on a scanner to allow the traveller to pass through the turnstile.

It was created by engineering and design undergraduates at MIT in Boston after they became frustrated at constantly losing their passes at the bottom of their bags.

One of the creators, Olivia Wen Seow, told Sky News: "We thought it would be much easier to wear them - as an accessory! The rings came as a natural solution, and fist-bumping the gantry is actually really fun."

The technology has been approved by the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority but Ms Wen Seow said they "want to bring the rings to transportation systems all over the world".

She added that they are looking at customising designs to make them more of a fashion accessory.

The project has also been put on the funding website Kickstarter in order to get more backing so they can buy a 3D printer and mass production moulds.
